A Great Learning Experience

As you know, the Club has decided to introduce a second ladies team this year so that more ladies may represent Royal Mougins at outside competitions. The first such tournament took place at the Sainte Baume Golf Club near St.-Maximin in the Var on March 19 and 20. Six Royal Mougins ladies with an average handicap of approx 13, all of which were 50+ in age, were to meet mostly single handicap players from seven other regional clubs – the youngest of which was 13 and the best handicap being +2,7!!!
Saturday’s stroke-play singles matches (scratch) went as expected, and of the two foursomes on Sunday morning, one was won, the other lost. Several of the five single match play matches played on Sunday afternoon went almost to the last hole, as the Royal Mougins girls fought like lionesses against their – on paper – much stronger opponents. However, at the end of the day, the inevitable was a reality, which means that the team will find itself in the regional second division next year.
The players were happy, however. Merete Petteroe, who played for the first time at an outside competition, expressed it well: “These two days have been an incredible learning experience, and they have given me total motivation to practice even more in order to succeed at the coming matches!”
Team manager, Conny Plesman, was very proud of the fighting attitude and team spirit of her girls, Marie-Laure Becker, Laurence Guillemard, Lene Bjerk-Bojesen, Maari Vesanen and Merete Petteroe. It was a useful learning experience, which will be put to another test end of April, when the team travels to Lille to take part in the promotional division of the French national championships.
