Vin Chaud for Our Ladies....

During the very last Ladies Day of the season, it has become something of a tradition for Merete Petteroe to invite Santa Claus to Royal Mougins in order to serve “vin chaud” to all the participants. Again this year, the man in red did not disappoint Merete and her co-organizer of the day, Dany Ramsay –  he actually turned up with 2 assistant Santas behind the 7th green, where the frozen ladies got their inner warmth back by drinking the piping hot wine. Delicious butter cookies were also offered and many of the contestant were so pleased that they now want to have this service repeated EVERY Tuesday throughout the year. However, the only promise Santa could give was that he will be back again on the last Tuesday of 2011.

A big thank you to Santa Claus, Merete and Dany for heating up a chilly day!

Our Head Green keeper is leaving us…..

 

It is with great sadness that I have to announce that our head green keeper – Benoit Falgayrac - has informed me that he has taken on another challenge with his former employer, Blue Green in the Bordeaux region.

Benoit joined Royal Mougins Golf Club at the end of 2003, after I met him while he was reconstructing the golf of Saint Maxime, which was partially destroyed by the terrible forest fires, which had created havoc in this region.

For the past 7 years, Benoit and his team have done a marvellous job in bringing the golf course back in shape, fencing it, putting in a new drainage system with very good results, renewing the whole irrigation system and changing various tee boxes, fairways, bunkers, lakes etc.

In other words: A total overhaul and a general refreshing and renovating exercise.

He always worked in close harmony and consultation with our original architect, Rick Baril of von Hagge,Smelek & Baril, as well as with our external consultant, Robin de Vooght – not only to optimize his working methods but also to test his own ideas.

I will miss him dearly as we had many open and frank discussions and a wonderful working relationship. We have shared many projects over the years, but most of all, I appreciate his personality and aim in life: Creating something beautiful within the means put at his disposal.

Benoit will leave us at the beginning of February 2011 to join his former employer, Blue Green (since 2008/9 in Dutch hands) and move to Bordeaux Lac GC, where he will oversee two 18-hole courses, as well as constructing another 9-hole course. If everything goes according to plan, as of 2013/14 Benoit will be responsible for the Western region of Blue Green France, which counts at least a dozen golf clubs.

I wish Benoit, his wife Laurence, and their 2 sons lots of luck and happiness in their new region, house, job, and school.

Réminiscence : The Trophy stays in the Clubhouse

At the end of a very exciting day, the Royal Mougins team proudly could lift the Réminiscence Trophy and return it to the shelf in our clubhouse yesterday.

My sincere congratulations and gratitude goes to Team Manager, Laurence Guillemard and the other 20 Royal Mougins ladies who have taken the time during the year to successfully defend the colours of the Club.

Linda (36 points), Laurence G (34 points), Catherine (33 points), Laurence R (30 points), Martin, Gilda, Zoya, Conny and Caroline played in a bright sunshine in the final Thursday November 4^th on our home turf. Marina and Julie kindly supported the team by caddying.

On Saturday 16, rendez vous to Cannes Mougins Golf to play a 4 ball better ball match play competition.
Sunday 17, 2nd round at Royal Mougins, followed by lunch and award ceremony.

Royal Cup - The Results

At the end of 54 holes played in a match play, the Eagles team, led by Judith Hayes, won with a total score of 46 to 36!

Another success for our Ladies!

At the Mid Amateurs French Championship, in Grasse, le Claux Amic, Gilda Vivarelli, our team manager, and her gang of motivated ladies have won the final against the Claux Amic team and got their entrance ticket to the 3rd national division after very tight matches.


Just one regret : Gilda will not be anymore our team manager next year, after seven years of hard work at Royal Mougins Golf.

Incredible but true : our Ladies end up First in the Reminiscence Trophy!

Four scores to remember :

• 43 points for Caroline Savary. Her First participation!
• 41 points for Zoya! She is often amongst the Best
• 37 ponts for Marina. Again !
• 34 points for Catherine. Always steady.

Dear Members,

Because of problems on greens (illness and stress), we decided to move forward greens spiking from week 40 to week 37 (13th of September).

Main Reason: the weather with more favourable temperatures for the grow of the new turf / grasses.

Anders Hansen @ Royal Mougins Golf

Last week, we had the visit of the famous professional player, Anders Hansen, currently ranked 7th at the Irish Open.
Having ended with a score of -4, he entrusted us with his impressions on the course:
" It's a wonderful course, from a distance the overdemanding and most surprising course that I have played in the South of France "
We wish him good luck for his 4th round!

Next Competitions

On August 21st we will organize competition " Opus Golf ", quality-label which syndicates the courses of "golf d 'exception".

This competition will be played in individual stableford,  shot gun start at 8.30 am, and the prize giving will be endowed by numerous partners of the label, like Smalto, Callaway, Polo Ralph Lauren etc...

August 29th we will welcome the Club Seniors championship, in stroke play for the first series and in stableford for 2nd series.

This competition is opened to the Members of the Club of + 50 years for the Ladies and + 55 years for the Men.

On September 4th we will have once again the BMW competition. It will be played this year in a shot gun at 9.30 am. Note that the number of tee times is limited!

Finally to round off this sports chapter, on September 11th will take place the Prize of the Sports Commission, competition which will allow to celebrate together the good results of the teams representing the colours of Royal Mougins, as well as champions of the Club, during a Venitian party which will be partly sponsored by AS.

News of the Golf Course

Dear Members,

The hot & humid days have arrived and so the related problems for the golf course where we have witnessed an outbreak of « Anthracnose » on various greens.

As there are virtually no means to fight this miniscule « funghi/mushroom » disease which affect the leaves of the grass, we have to wait till it has passed and then re-saw the affected patches on the greens.

At the same time we will try to limit the spreading of this disease by allowing the grass on the greens to grow slightly longer (to 3.5- 4 mm maximum) as this strengthens the (untouched) leaves and root channels. However, we will roll the greens more often to try to maintain the same speed of the greens.Will keep you informed when we have more news.

Grande Bastide - Première Division Senior Ladies

Our team ends up second at the Grande Bastide qualifying match, securing our First division position.
On the next day, we have challenged Mandelieu.
Our team won the  foursome competition, with Conny and Nicole. Catherine has honorably lost at hole # 18.
Unfortunatly, I lost my match play.
Anyhow, we stay in the First division and we are aiming at the victory next year!!

They did it again : The 2010 Buddies' Cup

On June 19th, the 2010 Buddies' Cup, organized every year by Daniel Laroque has been a great success, with a lot participating Members.

Ladies vs. Men Better Ball match-play

On Sunday, June 20 the traditional Ladies vs. Men Better Ball match-play tournament was played, and in spite of some thunder and lightning, the 62 players had a wonderful day on and off the course. The ladies fought a fierce battle, using every possible means to upset and disturb their male opponents – but it was all in vain. The not-so gallant men thrashed the ladies for the second consecutive year, but in all fairness it has to be said that many matches went to the very last hole.

After the game, the participants enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch in the clubhouse, graciously sponsored by the Men’s section and the Association Sportive.

During the meal, there was an animated charity auction, where several wonderful paintings, created and donated by talented Members, were sold. Vouchers, donated by the Royal Mougins Spa and other items kindly donated by Members were also auctioned off - thank you very much Merete Frickman, Danièle Jaquillard, Loes Van Berkel, Marina Baumler and  David Benahim for your generous contribution!

In the end a total of almost 1.500 euros was collected. A big hand to all the Members for supporting the worthy case of Handigolf.

Nine & Dine...

I wholeheartedly support this fantastic initiative!! What I did not know, my sincere apologies for this omission, were the past conditions of the Happy Hour.
It appears that in previous years, for an unknown reason, other drinks than wine and beer were not included. I, however, do not see any difference in whatever drinks Members order. Therefore: “yes”; of course people can drink whatever they want during Happy Hour under the same conditions and they can at the same time take their bottles of wine ordered to the dining table.

The War against our yearly invaders ( PDS= annual weeds)

                           

In order to prevent our golf course ( mostly the fairways !) from being invaded by different and unwanted grass types, which generally bloom and prosper in these Mediterranean regions in the summer season and which you probably also have in your gardens, our maintenance team tried out a different product this year, which was supposed to reduce the germination of these invaders, and leave the normal rye grass untouched.

This experiment (apparently) did not succeed too well as it not only affected the invasive sorts but also our desired types as the product filtered too deeply into the soil. Discussions have been held with the supplier of this product, and we are investigating if similar occurrences took place on other golf courses, and what we can do at this stage to have our course return to its normal condition before the real hot season starts.

It is important to know that, under normal circumstances, the fairways will return to their usual condition within 1-2 months after the treatment, which took place early may, but we hope that with an additional injection of fertilizers we will see the desired « green » results on the fairways by mid july. After that procedure, we will have to overseed certain regions in order to have a more stable and dense coverage.

Tee boxes, roughs, and most importantly greens are and will not be affected at all by these interventions.

It means, however, that we have to follow several operations on the course which may affect your play, but we will do our best to limit these to a minimum, but without compromising the condition of the course.

Reminiscence Ladies Trophy

Thursday, May 20 the ladies team, managed by Laurence Guillemard, played the local inter-club competition, Coupe Reminiscence, at Claux d’Amic.

Again, the Royal ladies performed brilliantly and finished 2nd among the 10 participating clubs. The following scores are especially worth mentioning: Ine 34 points, Martine 33, Conny 33 and Zoya 32. The next competition in the Reminescense series takes place at Grande Bastide on June 10.

Hole in One

Congratulation to Ine Zwaans, who made a terrific hole in one on the second hole, during the Western competition, 22nd of May 2010.

The Ladies Day on Tuesday, May 18 was a little different.....

... After having played 9 holes, the 20 contestants met with the internationally renowned golf referee, Ted Patchett for a session of golf rules. The event included a visit on the course, where certain often disputed interpretations of the rules were discussed. One of these is on the 6^th hole, when the ball lies close to the fence along the road. Where do you drop? Well, according to Ted Patchett it is almost impossible to drop the ball correctly there, which leaves only one solution: Go back to the tee and play your 3^rd shot. The same applies along the fence on the 5^th hole. A solution may be that everything to the left of the car path is declared out-of- bonds. The session ended with a pleasant lunch on the terrace, during which Ted Patchett willingly answered a number of golf rule questions from the ladies.
